Regularly nicknamed the Gray, the Barred Plymouth Rock laying hen is one of our heritage breeds. This ancestral, non-cross-bred hen is very docile indeed.
This is a dual-purpose hen. This means she stays plump after laying, so you can be satisfied with a little more meat at the end of her career. She lays good-calibre eggs on a slightly less regular basis than commercial hens, and will lay less regularly but for longer.
Extremely calm and docile, she's the ideal hen for children. This maternal side leads to a strong tendency to brood. She's heavy and her plumage is very downy, so she's very hardy for our cold seasons.
