A staple of family backyards, the brown or red hen is a modern hybrid variety resulting from various crosses. The aim is to produce a productive, robust hen. The color of its plumage varies from a lighter to a darker red, depending on the individual.
Known by many names: Warren, Bovan, Lohman, ISA, Hy-line...depending on crossbreeding and hatchery origin, it's also known as the farm hen. Very endearing, they can be tamed quickly, and are the most popular hens on the family market today.
Red hens can live up to 4 years, depending on the strain and optimal conditions, but we don't expect them to produce eggs beyond the age of 2, always bearing in mind that it's only in the first year that the yield will be exceptional. In this case, we're talking about 270+ eggs in the first year if conditions are optimal. They make excellent pets thanks to their calm disposition, and rarely brood.
This is a hardy hen that adapts well to its environment and climate, whether caged or free-range. It has the advantage of laying almost all year round, with the necessary facilities.
